Close to 2,000 students explored their post 18 opportunities and progression choices at a Moving On Day held at The Sixth Form College Farnborough.

The annual event, which was partly funded by Enterprise M3 Careers Hub, aimed to inform Year 12 students of the many progression pathways available to help them make well-informed career choices. During the July event, they were able to meet face-to-face with employers from a variety of sectors, including the arts, law and health, as well as find out about job search skills, higher education and apprenticeship opportunities.

Year 12 students had the choice to attend four out of 190 seminars on offer and visit 136 exhibition stands, which include the likes of Farnborough Airport, Siemens, BAE Systems, British Airways, AWE, Flour, EY and NHS Frimley Health.

Also attending were Year 10 students from Kings International College, based in Camberley, as part of a project called ENTHUSE, which is about raising awareness of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers and STEM subjects.

Thanks to sponsorship from family law firm KJ Smith Solicitors and several universities including the University of Winchester and the University of Portsmouth, students were able to take part in three activities – The Planetarium, Medical Mavericks and a science experiment in a chemistry laboratory, which proved to be a huge hit.

Nikki Coleman, Head Careers Education Information Advice & Guidance at The Sixth Form College Farnborough, said: “Moving On Day is a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage with academics and businesses to inspire and motivate them to make informed decisions about their post 18 pathways. We are hugely appreciative of everyone who supports this event and helps it to be one of the biggest and best in the South East.”

Suzanne Dixon, EM3 Careers and Skills Manager, said: “It was wonderful to see the college yet again hosting such a successful Moving On Day. The EM3 Careers Hub were happy to support this fantastic day as part of our Gatsby Benchmark 1 project, which provides funds to schools and colleges to put on careers events. These are so important as they help students weigh up their options and discover the wide variety of exciting opportunities open to them in one place.”
