Work is now underway to install the solar PV array next to Aldershot rail station, as part of the ‘Riding Sunbeams’ project. This is supported by Enterprise M3 as part of our clean growth ambitions.
You can read more about this in our ‘Developing Our Approach - Local Industrial Strategy’ document.
The project is led by Community Energy South, an umbrella organisation and regional hub enabling its members to grow as sustainable low carbon businesses in the South East of England.
Riding Sunbeams is a world leading project to connect solar panels directly into electrified rail routes to power the trains.
Direct supply of solar power to rail traction systems has never been done. But it has huge potential - from metros, trams and railways in the UK and around the world.
After extensive feasibility work and research, the project leaders are connecting the first pilot solar panels to the railway.
