Enterprise M3 LEP hosted the latest in a series of workshops to explore the decarbonisation of the aerospace industry in our region, as part of our work to nurture a Jet Zero Cluster.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders from across the region with representatives from business, Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, local authorities and universities to discuss findings from EM3 commissioned research to map our region’s Jet Zero businesses and research strengths.

The detailed analysis, carried out by SQW, an independent economic and social development research provider, highlighted that there is a strong concentration of small and medium sized businesses operating in the Jet Zero field within EM3. Many are small or micro-businesses, developing innovative technological advances that will be crucial to achieving net zero emissions. There are also hundreds of businesses working at the edge of the aviation industry, looking at the transition to low carbon solutions in the supply chain.

During the workshop, the group also discussed options for the future focus of the Jet Zero Cluster, work that EM3 will be continuing to support as we develop an action plan to drive the cluster forward and attract further investment in our region.

Commenting on the Cluster and mapping exercise, Dr William Lovegrove, Director of Innovation Strategy at the University of Surrey said:

“This is a good piece of work, helping to frame the Jet Zero Cluster within our region and drive its future potential as a leading hub of net zero aviation advancements.”

Chris Burchell, Head of Enterprise and Innovation at EM3 and leading the cluster on behalf of the LEP, said:

“This latest research confirms what we suspected, there is a strong concentration of highly innovative and cutting-edge technology being developed within our region, to support the decarbonisation of the aerospace industry.

"We look forward to continuing to work closely with industry partners, our universities and local authorities to ensure the future development of the EM3 Jet Zero Cluster to attract investment and wider recognition of our region’s strengths in this field.”
