Young people with ambitions to see their careers take-off in the aerospace sector, have an exciting opportunity to enjoy a day of hands-on activities, virtual reality experiences and career workshops at Farnborough International Airshow 2022.

Taking place on Friday 22 July, the Pioneers of Tomorrow event, will be held on the highly anticipated public day and is being organised in collaboration between Farnborough International and ADS, with the support of Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (EM3) and the Aerospace Research & Innovation Centre (ARIC) at Farnborough College of Technology, along with other partners and sponsors.

Many of the hands-on activities will focus on skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). There will also be a dedicated careers hub for advice, inspirational speakers, plus an opportunity to enjoy the thrilling air display.

The day aims to bring the world of aerospace to the next generation of leaders. It will showcase the latest technology and leading businesses and give those young people considering a career in this field unprecedented access to the wide and varied aerospace sector and crucially, talk directly to experts about their prospects.

With an estimated shortage of 173,000 professionals in the UK’s STEAM sector, Tracey Tatam, EM3’s Senior Enterprise Coordinator, said: “We hope the Pioneers of Tomorrow event will not only inspire and inform the next generation, but also provide a platform for the global aerospace sector to address major concerns about its future workforce.”

The Enterprise M3 area covering most of Hampshire and west Surrey has a reputation for its strong knowledge-based economy which is conducive to business-led innovation, attracting major players from the aerospace sector.

Jamie Mackay, Skills Strategy Manager at EM3, said: “We have around 20 colleges and universities offering a breadth of STEAM subject areas, together with providers working with employers to create apprenticeship opportunities, so it’s understandable why the EM3 region is one of the UK’s leading aerospace and defence locations.

“The EM3 area has a proud history in aerospace and with its close proximity to four airports – Heathrow, Gatwick, Southampton and of course Farnborough – it’s no surprise that well-known names such as Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing, Gulfstream and QinetiQ are based in the area.”

With its new low carbon, high growth vision, EM3 is playing a key role in supporting new and established businesses in the aerospace sector.
