From 1 April 2024, the responsibility for LEP functions across the Enterprise M3 LEP region has transferred to Hampshire County Council and Surrey County Council.

The Enterprise M3 Board met for the last time in March 2024 and Enterprise M3 LEP is no longer operating as an organisation.

Please note that Enterprise M3 LEP staff have transferred to Hampshire County Council to continue to deliver services and activities in Hampshire, including the Growth Hub, the Careers Hub, work on key business sectors, and trade and investment.

Project description

The Environment Agency is working in partnership with the local authorities in the area to develop the River Thames Scheme. It will deliver significant economic, social and environmental benefits alongside the reduction in flood risks including new wildlife habitats and areas for sport and recreation. The shared vision for the scheme is: ‘protecting our communities; securing our economy; enhancing our Thames’.

The River Thames Scheme would reduce flood risk to in communities near Heathrow, the UK's largest employment site, including Datchet, Wraysbury, Egham, Staines, Chertsey and Shepperton.

The Scheme consists of large scale engineering work to construct a flood channel as well as improvements to three of the Thames weirs, provision of local flood protection for up 1,500 individual properties and improved flood incident response plans. The flood channel will be between 30 and 60 metres wide and 17 kilometres long (built in 3 sections).

Project output

The River Thames Scheme will reduce flood risk to people living and working near the Thames.

It will:

  • enhance the resilience of nationally important infrastructure
  • contribute to a vibrant local economy
  • create many recreational opportunities
