World’s first 5G Digital Gaming Hub launched in Surrey

Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) in partnership with the University of Surrey, is pleased to announce the launch of the world’s first ever 5G Digital Games Hub at the University of Surrey. The LEP’s investment of £1.75 million in this project is part of a wider strategy to create a large scale 5G step-out digital games cluster that will serve the UK’s digital gaming industry.

The project will enable digital gaming businesses in the region to gain access to a fully operational 5G test bed at the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC), as well as the University of surrey’s Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), which offers video-realistic content production for virtual reality, games and film.

Geoff French, CBE, Chair of Enterprise M3 LEP said:

“The 5G Digital Games Hub will play a key role in harnessing and maximising our sectoral strength in digital technologies. We are delighted by this development, which apart from being the first of its kind in the world, will provide the much needed base to bring the gaming communities together, drive innovation and accelerate economic growth in our area.”

In addition to supporting the UK gaming industry - particularly the Guildford/Aldershot games cluster, the newly launched 5G Digital Games Hub will provide non-gaming companies across the Enterprise M3 area with a unique advantage, in terms of developing new products and services that will utilise offshoots of gaming technologies.

The Digital Games Hub is the second phase of a £5 million Local Growth Fund investment by Enterprise M3 into the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey. The project builds on the first phase, which involved an initial £1.75 million investment to fund the world’s first fully operational “end-to-end” 5G test bed in Guildford and the 5G step-out facility installed at the Basingstoke Innovation Centre, providing local start-ups and SMEs direct access to an indoor test facility.

In its bid to consolidate the UK’s global leadership in 5G development, the Government recently announced a £16 million cash award for three UK institutions, led by the University of Surrey, to work towards the world’s first end-to-end 5G trial in 2018.

Geoff added: “We are pleased to see that our initial investment in 5GIC has been instrumental in attracting further participation and investments in 5G technology. We welcome the Government’s recognition and funding for 5G, which will complement our investment to create a future of 5G-enabled opportunities for businesses in our LEP area.”
