Tech Week comes to Guildford

The region’s growing global reputation as a centre for innovation in creative tech receives an important boost.

More than thirty creative tech businesses from Asia were drawn to Guildford to discover why it has been dubbed the “Hollywood of Gaming”.

Over 30 companies from the gaming, VR, animation and AI industries in India and South Korea attended a one-day show case event in Surrey.

It included highlighting the strengths of the Guildford and Aldershot gaming/VR cluster, a presentation by holographic business Double Me, and information about support for companies moving into the area. The day also featured a demonstration of a 5G hologram, a discussion about the future of new and innovative technology and models for international commercialisation. Opportunities for collaborating were also highlighted throughout the visit.

Roya Croudace, Director of the EM3 Growth Hub said:

“Gaming and VR industries who come to Guildford and Aldershot find themselves among like-minded innovative businesses, a great supply of talent and skills,  research capability from our regional universities and colleges, good business support  and easy access to London markets without the premium costs. This was a great opportunity to share that message with industry colleagues from India and South Korea. “

The visit was testimony to a successful partnership between the Department of International Trade, University of Surrey, Enterprise M3 LEP, EM3 Growth Hub, and the Invest in Surrey and Hampshire who hosted the day together as  part of London Tech Week .

Samuel Read, Gaming and Immersive Technology Partnership Manager at the University of Surrey said: ”We are thrilled to work with Enterprise M3, the Growth Hub and DIT to support sector growth in our region. We look forward to working together on future projects and initiatives.”

The visit was a significant step towards placing the region on the global map for gaming and VR. It also helped to raise a profile among DIT HQ colleagues as well as potential companies looking to settle in our region.
