EM3’s outstanding hi-tech, defence sector showcased to Government adviser

The Chief Business Adviser for BEIS visited the EM3 region to see first-hand the pioneering work of a leading, global, hi-tech defence company.
QinetiQ’s Farnborough HQ was the destination for Nick Chism of the Government’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
He was given an insight into QinetiQ’s strengths in research, development and innovation. The company is a key supplier of security and defence systems to the Government. It employs 1,700 people across four sites in Hampshire and has conducted over £300m of R&D. It is a world leader in battlefield robotics and in Global Navigation design and security, with its OptaSense technology deployed monitoring Nato borders.
Enterprise M3 representatives attended the visit as QinetiQ and the entire defence and security sector in the region are pivotal to growth, as identified in the emerging Local Industrial Strategy.
EM3’s Future Initiatives Manager, Sue Littlemore, said: “QinetiQ is an outstanding example of the business-led innovation which characterises the Enterprise M3 economy. The innovation we saw were in areas including the use of immersive technology, space technology and electric military vehicles. But, we were told, this just ‘skimmed the surface’.
“QinetiQ is just one of many companies, large and smaller, in our area contributing to our high tech, high productivity, high exporting, digital, knowledge-based economy.
A key theme in the Enterprise M3 Local Industrial strategy will focus on maintaining and enhancing the conditions and ‘ecosystems’ which allow this type of regional economy to flourish in the interests of our area and the whole of the UK.
