Y10/11 mock interviews - The Mountbatten School

Normally, the students of Mountbatten School in Romsey, have a full day of mock interviews in the summer during their Work Enrichment Day. Sadly, due to Covid it was cancelled last year. Conscious that the now Year 11s (who missed out last year) needed support ahead of their upcoming college interviews, the Careers Leader Sindy Shakya contacted all of their employer links and parents asking for help.

The response was amazing, meaning that the school was able to offer every student who signed up (roughly a third of the year group) with a mock interview. Sindy told us,

'Afterwards, I was stopped by many students who commented on how helpful their mock interview was and excitedly told me that they have now been offered a place in college'.

Employer Drive - George Abbot School

George Abbot school in Guildford have benefitted from a joint employer drive between their Enterprise Adviser (EA) Christine Jones and Adam Watts of the EM3 CEC Team Employer Engagement team.

Christine brought a clear brief to Adam which was created in collaboration with the school:

“They have an interest in 6 key industries: Arts, Graphic Design, History, Culture, Environment and Gaming. Students are ready to engage with employers from those sectors via careers talks and site visits.”

This concentrated ‘ask’ prompted Adam to approach key business leaders in the local area and be clear of what was required.

The response from employers has been brilliant and so far, they've been able to connect employers from five out of the six identified sectors to the school.

This is a great example of what can be achieved when a Careers Leader, EA and the employer engagement team work collaboratively.

Promoting Industry Placements - Basingstoke College of Technology (BCOT)

BCOT recently hosted a new virtual event that was really successful.

Facilitated by Anna Thorpe and with a presentation by the EA, Peter Bartlett it took place for BCOT students and their parents in September. Peter told us,

'The session was the first of its kind. Attendance was ahead of expectations with 129 active users each with multiple attendees. The objective of the session was to demonstrate the value and importance of an industry placement and inspire students to proactively get involved for their own future benefit. With a constant stream of questions and positive comments the engagement level was higher than anticipated, demonstrating that the objective was met for those that attended' .

Since the running of the virtual session, viewing of the recorded version have also been high.

Where do our students go when they leave Esher Sixth Form College?

The majority of our students go on to university after leaving Esher. However, a growing proportion of our students are applying for apprenticeships and we also have students who choose to take a gap year, go into full time employment and those who enrol on Art Foundation Courses. The pie chart at the top of the page shows the breakdown of destinations from our 2020 leavers.

Chertsey High School - Excursion Policy

Excursion Policy changes - some schools have implemented policy changes to their processes when planning excursions. This means that all staff involved in planning a trip etc now have to include a careers element.

This is a great idea and one which others may want to copy as it put careers on the agenda with all teachers when they are considering external activities.
