Project Description

The proposal consists of a package of sustainable measures to improve walking, cycling and accessibility in Winchester City: • Accessibility improvements to Westgate and Western schools and in surrounding areas. This includes improvement to existing pedestrian routes and crossing facilities to both schools, to allow safe access by parents and children. The scheme also incorporates traffic calming on Cheriton Road to keep traffic speeds low and to allow parents and children to cross the road safely. • Improvements to the existing pedestrian crossing on St Pauls Hill which will improve access to the railway station • Provision of an uncontrolled crossing on Romsey Road near the junction with Upper High Street.

Accessibility improvements to Westgate and Western schools This measure provide improved access for all to Westgate and Western Schools in Winchester and in surrounding areas. It provides safe pedestrian and cycle routes to the schools. These improvements complement those improvements carried out as part of the expansion of Westgate School. Pedestrian access to the station car park and station Pedestrians crossed St Pauls Hill between the Railway Inn and the Stockbridge Road junction through an informal pedestrian access to the car park which was seen as in need of improvement.. This measure provides a formal safer pedestrian access alongside aspirations for new vehicular access to car park off St Pauls Hill. It improves pedestrian access to the station car park and station as well as links to jobs in the City Centre. Uncontrolled crossing point at Upper High Street Uncontrolled crossing point on Romsey Road near the Upper High Street/Romsey Road roundabout. Improvement includes drop kerbs, tactile paving and bollards possibly. Improves Romsey Road corridor access into the City and railway station
