Work has started on a multi million pound transformation of Camberley High Street, supporting its regeneration into a vibrant community for the future.

A ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday, January 8th, kickstarted £4.4million worth of improvement works overhauling the town’s High Street, Princess Way and Knoll Walk.

The Rt Hon Jake Berry MP, Minister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth, said:

This Government is committed to boosting economic growth across the UK and ensuring every community has the support and investment it needs to grow and flourish.

High streets are at the heart of our communities and thanks to £3.5 million of Government support from the Local Growth Fund, Camberley’s high street will be transformed. This regeneration will unlock Camberley’s full economic potential and ensure the town centre remains a vibrant place for people who live, work and visit the area at the heart of the community and help.

Kathy Slack OBE, CEO, Enterprise M3 LEP, which provided the £3.5m funding as part of the government’s Local Growth Fund, said:

Enterprise M3 is delighted to be supporting this valuable project. Our investment of £3.5 million in these improvements will help create a vibrant town centre which will attract further investment by companies into the area and create a dynamic community in Camberley.

Our investment underpins our plans for economic growth which will provide a better quality of life around the Blackwater Valley.

Also present at the event were representatives from Surrey County Council, Surrey Heath Borough Council, the Project Centre, Construction and Civil Engineering Company, Dyer and Butler who are carrying out the works and Camberley’s businesses.

Councillor Richard Brooks, Leader, Surrey Heath Borough Council said:

Today marks the start on an eagerly anticipated project that will bring significant improvements to Camberley town centre - not only improving the High Street’s road and pavement surfaces but also providing new lighting, plants and street furniture in Princess Way and Knoll Walk.  The project also includes unique public art especially commissioned for Camberley.

“Our thanks to Enterprise M3 LEP who have enabled this project to happen with their grant and for their continued support of the regeneration of Camberley town centre. Many thanks to Kathy Slack for attending our event today.

Tim Pashen, Deputy Chief Executive (Interim), Surrey Heath Borough Council said:

Surrey Heath Borough Council is working with a number of partners on different projects to make huge improvements to Camberley.  The improved High Street, Princess Way and Knoll Walk will further help us to reach our ambition for the regeneration of the town centre.

This project has taken a few years to reach this point and has been complex involving many people and specialist companies. Many thanks to everyone who has been involved.

Steve Wilson, Dyer and Butler’s Divisional Director said:

We are delighted to be working with Surrey Heath Borough Council to provide these improvement works. This is an exciting development which will provide fantastic improvements for this area.

The entire project is set to be completed by early 2021.  The work will be undertaken in five phases and the High Street and Princess Way will be fully accessible to pedestrians throughout the works.
